                                                                      Telephone Conversation

In January,1989, it came to Diane's attention that Christie was confiding to peers that she had been coerced by State agents to lie in Court, that in truth her mom was not the perpetrator, (App 39).  One Year later, Christie would make these same confessions during a telephone conversation, not realizing her words were being tape-recorded, (App 5, 15, 64). The following is part of a transcript  taken from that telephone conversation.  Christie is designated with the letter 'C', the respondent with the letter 'D'.

D)          "Do ya ever talk to your, um, your real Dad " ?

C)          "Uh Huh. (no) I haven't talked to him for many years ".

D)          "Really? Do you ever think about calling him and just telling 'im 'thanks!

                thanks a lot, man' " ?.

C)          "I want to. But, no ". (chuckle)

D)          "Do, um, do Fred Hugi, are they nice to you?  Are they like, do you guys

do family stuff? Or are they like, uh... "

C)          "Well, not... With JoAnn..JoAnn and I, we do, I mean. But Fred.  He's

sorta like a loner. But he's just...he likes, he likes quiet things. He

doesn't like to do rowdy..go to, go to a, you know, some kind of event ",

              (p. 26).

D)           "Huh. That's, um... Well, you know, this, this, um, these ladies that were

trying to work with your mom. If, um, if there was a way like if you could

tell them without having to like, you know, hassle you or anything.  If

there, is a way that you could tell 'em that you don't think your mom

shot you that you don't remember it anymore or somethin' like, like do

you remem... Do you not remember 'cause you just can't remember it

or do you remember it like because your doctor was like talking to you

all the time and so that is what you thought you remembered" ?

C)            "Mmm. I don't remember it", (p. 27)

D)            "Yeah. Well, um, did anybody ever like explain to you why you can't

see your Grandparents or your parents or anything? Or did they just

say never going to see 'em again" ?.

C)            " They didn't... They didn't say anything at all. They never brought it up.

                  And I haven't either".

D)             "Really.  Huh. Christie, call your Grandma and Grandpa. Tell 'em you

don't remember your mom hurting you. Tell' em that you don't

remember and that you just, you'd like somebody to talk to. Cause

you used to be able to trust your Grandma and Grandpa , huh" ?

C)             "Yeah".

D)             "And you still could. You still could trust 'em. That means so much to

them if you'd call 'em and just say Hi. Like before, you know.  Before,

like, Fred and JoAnn get home today. Do they get home soon" ?  Are

we almost, are we running outta time" ?

C)            "Well, they'll be, um, they won't be here until probably another half an

                  hour".

D)            "Huh. You know that, um, when you were in therapy in the beginning.

Did you have more than one therapist" ?, (p.30).

C)             "Only had one I think".

D)             "One?  And so he just talked to you over and over about what

happened and wanted you to tell him who it was" ?

C)             "Yeah".

D)             "So you finally just said your Mom 'cause he was buggin you so much'

you just wanted him to shut up already" ?

C)             "Yeah". (chuckle).

D)             "That's kinda how I did it"

D)              "What was that" ?

C)              "A magazine. I dropped it".

D)              "Oops! So, you know, you should.... So you just like remember him

talking to you so much that you finally just said that in court.  And did

you...it in court cause you thought you'd be able to see her once you

said it" ? Like 'what she said on the interview" ?,

C)              "I didn't hear her right. I mean, I don't know".

D)              "You know, like on that interview on the..where your Mom said that

she finally, that you finally just said, said her name because by then

you knew what they wanted you to say. And they told you you couldn't

see your Mom until you told 'em who did it. So finally you just said

your Mom's name so you could finally see her" ? Was that true" ?

C)             "Well, I didn't know anything about it. I'd be able to see her again.  But,

they just..they knew..that, you know, they, that she did it and I should

say that she did it. You know".

D)             "But you really didn't remember it, huh" ?

C)             "Huh uh". (no) ;  (p.p.31-2).
