James Clair Haynes, (above) confessed to over a dozen people that he committed the crime against the Downs family. He told a close friend the day after the shooting that he was responsible for the attack. Haynes was a member of the 'Free Souls' criminal biker gang, a drug dealer and methamphetamine cook at the time of the incident. A man with a criminal past and history of violence who admitted himself to being present when an uncle and aunt killed and dismembered a woman. He told friends that he helped distribute the body parts to garbage bins around the Springfield and Eugene area. It is reported Haynes once threatened a mother that he would kill her children. This was because she had reported his brother to the police. Both Haynes and District Attorney Pat Horton (who directed the case against Diane) were present on the same photographs taken at drug parties.
